24 Degrees

The winter is here and spending time outdoors is usually not an option. The days when the sky is clear and the wind is light are few and far between. Today was one of those few days so I took this opportunity to go to Gantry State Park to take some photographs of midtown Manhattan. Gantry State Park is located on the banks of the East River in Long Island City, New York.

The park, which opened in 1998, was a former industrial space that was turned into a public park with amazing views of Manhattan. The gantry cranes are a reminder of this areas industrial past. In the background you can see new loft apartments, another sign of the change from an industrial zone to a residential area.
Directly across from one the the four piers in the park is the United Nations Headquarters. The large rectangular silver building is the Secretariat Building.

This photograph was taken from the northern most pier. This is a picture of the Upper East Side. On the right side of the picture you can see the 59Th Street Bridge. This bridge connects the boroughs of Queens and Manhattan.

Ten blocks south and several blocks west of the United Nations headquarters is one of the most recognizable landmarks in all of the world. This is a photograph of the Empire State Building and the surrounding buildings.

Even though New York is the most populous city in the country, nature is abundant. This photograph is an example of the wild flowers that flourish in NYC. Gantry State park has several areas of natural plant life and grassy areas for relaxation.

Thank you for taking the time to view my blog. As always comments, question and suggestions are always welcome. I have several projects planned but could always use some inspiration. If you have anything you would like to see in the NYC area let me know.
Upcoming shoots:
Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island/Liberty State Park
Times Square
Rockefeller Center/Top of the Rock Observation Deck
Central Park
Wall Street

  1. Hey buddy love the blog! What about a subway project? I have seen photos of some of the grafitti and the people and think this might be great. I know lighting down there can suck, but just a thought.

Congrats on the blog, the site and all that you're doing.

  2. I really wanted to do a tranportation project. Subways, trains, buses, cabs and people. The MTA doesn't really approve of people taking pictures in the subways, but I think I can get around that. Great idea.
